ART Bus Series: ART 51 (Ballston – Virginia Hospital Center)

ATP TAKEAWAY: When ART bus service is operating during severe weather conditions, make sure you're at a bus stop with a blue snowflake. This will ensure the bus driver will stop at your stop!

This post is part of a series highlighting the ART bus lines throughout Arlington County and how both residents and visitors alike can take advantage of the ART bus system. Check out the other ART routes in this series here.

Next up in our ART Bus Series is the ART 51, which is a convenient way to travel from Ballston to Virginia Hospital Center and to Lee Harrison Shopping Center. The ART 51 route is once again a great alternative to driving.

On this route you will pass through one of my favorite spots, Lacey Woods Park. This park has all kind of sporting and picnic facilities including basketball courts, nature trails, open green space, and more. Definitely worth a visit and if you have a little one, he/she is sure to love this park!

This route specifically services Virginia Hospital Center, which offers exceptional care and service to all its patients; it has also been named one of America’s 100 Top Hospitals. The Hospital Center is a leading example of all the benefits a Gold Level Employer Champion offers and is a long-time partner of Arlington Transportation Partners. If you are like me, new year = new health and fitness goals. Which means it’s time to look for health and fitness classes like yoga, Pilates, and Zumba. Did you know that Virginia Hospital Center offers a variety of classes at both their locations, George Mason Drive (main building) and the Carlin Springs Campus – Urgent Care Center. Happy exercising!

Route Timings

The ART 51 operated by Arlington County with support from Virginia Hospital Center runs every 30 minutes during weekday rush hours. In its constant effort to provide the best service to its riders, ART has modified its severe weather policy with three levels of service: Limited, Severe, and No Service. During severe weather the ART 51 only operates between Ballston Metro Station and 19th Street to serve the hospital.

Pro Tip: Bus stops that are in operation during severe weather conditions have a blue snowflake in the upper corner of the bus stop. Not all bus stops along a specific route will be in service during severe weather conditions, so look for the snowflake.

ART RealTime Arrivals are available through this ART specific Rider Tool. You can also click to view a print-friendly ART 51 route and schedule PDF.

Metro Station Stops

The ART 51 stops at Ballston Metro Station which provides Orange and Silver Line service. You can also catch other ART or Metrobus routes at the Ballston bus depot.

Highlighted ART 51 Stops

Now time for my personal fun picks on this route.

Pinky’s Fun Picks

  • Lacey Woods Park and if you are up for walking a little, approximately a mile from the park is Lost Dog Café—another favorite restaurant of mine (great pizzas and beer)
  • My favorite restaurants at Lee Harrison Shopping Center – Pie-Tanza (great Neapolitan-style pizzas) and Taqueria El Poblano (the enchiladas are yum!)
