ATP TAKEAWAY: Next Friday, May 20, is one of the DC region’s best spring events – Bike to Work Day! With 83 pit stops throughout the metropolitan area, including seven in Arlington, there are opportunities for commuters everywhere to join fellow bicycle riders and try a healthy and fun way to get to work.

We are officially one week away from Bike to Work Day!

If you haven’t registered yet, be sure to sign up for free to receive a t-shirt at your designated pit stop. You’ll also be able to pick up other giveaways, free coffee and food (aka District Taco, Best Buns Bakery, etc), as well as raffles and fun games. Plus, your favorite ATP staff members will be volunteering and helping out BikeArlington at the Rosslyn, Ballston, Columbia Pike and Shirlington pit stops!

If that isn’t enough to convince you, here are three more reasons to participate in Bike to Work Day next week:

1. Great for new riders

Employee, Businessman riding a bike, Arlington CountyIf you’ve never biked to work before, Bike to Work Day is actually the perfect time to try it out! With literally thousands of other bike riders on the trails, bike lanes and streets, you won’t be alone on your ride to work. You can go as slow or as fast as you want, wear your work clothes or ride in spandex, throw on a backpack or put your things in a basket – Bike to Work Day is judgement-free! New riders can also check out organized Bicycle Convoys, where groups of riders bike together to one of the many pit stops. Be sure to check out great resources from ATP, BikeArlington and the Bike to Work Day DC website!

2. Start a new routine and get more exercise

For many people, Bike to Work Day is the extra incentive some commuters need to start biking to work regularly. With summer and warmer weather around the corner, you could begin a new routine and bike to work on a regular basis, every Friday for example, starting with Bike to Work Day! Biking is a great way to get additional exercise during the day – you can feel less guilty about skipping the gym after work.

3. Champions credit

Employers, commercial properties, multi-family residential buildings and schools can all earn credit in ATP’s Champions program by promoting and/or participating in Bike to Work Day. You can distribute this flyer to employees and tenants and encourage people to register, or even host your own Bike to Work Day event, such as free breakfast for bike riders. Contact your ATP rep to learn how you get earn last minute Champions credit for Bike to Work Day!

Remember, be sure to register and decide on your designated pit stop. We hope to see you out on two wheels on May 20!
