Arlington Public Schools (APS) provide generous commuter benefits to faculty and staff that chose transit, bike, walk, carpool, or vanpool for their commutes to school. Since there is no longer a need to commute during full-time distance learning, some of these benefits have been temporarily put on hold. In the meantime, APS educators, faculty, and staff can still take advantage of their corporate Capital Bikeshare memberships to enhance physical and mental health while working from home.
Before the pandemic disrupted commute behaviors, the number of APS employees enrolled in the commuter benefits program had significantly increased year-over-year. As of March 2020, over 700 employees were receiving commuter benefits for their commute. Since 2019, there was a 45% increase in participation with the mass transit subsidy program and a 66% increase in bike benefit participation.
These metrics will likely change when schools re-open, but incentive programs will continue to play an important role in encouraging sustainable and safe commutes back to school.
APS employees can still take advantage of a free Capital Bikeshare annual membership while working from home. Capital Bikeshare offers an easy and safe way to get around town, exercise, and enjoy the great outdoors as fall approaches. Annual members have access to unlimited rides under 30 minutes, including the new e-bikes available in Arlington and DC.
As the region plans for a safe return to school, ATP is here to help educators and staff navigate their new commute options. Contact us for more information about promoting bicycling, walking, and other transportation alternatives when the time comes to return to campus.
