Prepare for your Commute During National Preparedness Month

Written by Ellie Heil | September 23, 2025

As a commuter, you’ve probably had a couple of days where things just didn’t go as planned. Severe weather or power and internet outages can have extreme impacts on your commute and can potentially be dangerous. Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP) has a few ideas on how to prepare to avoid mishaps and, when possible, keep business running as normal.

Bring the Necessities

ATP’s Employer team got together to discuss our must-haves for our commutes that help us stay prepared for bad weather or other disruptions.

  • Compact umbrella
  • First-aid supplies
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Small water bottle
  • Portable charger

In addition to these items, you can also keep a few things at work, so you don’t have to carry them with you. Having an extra pair of comfortable shoes and socks at work is helpful if you wear sneakers or cycling shoes during your commute. Keep a phone charger in your desk to ensure you’ll have enough battery to tap your virtual SmarTrip card on the way home. It’s also a good idea to keep a physical pre-loaded SmarTrip card in your bag as a backup.

Overcome Barriers for a Successful Commute

Staying prepared for your commute starts before you even head out for the day. Here are a few ideas for different setbacks you might encounter on your commute.

Severe Weather

To avoid getting caught unprepared in bad weather, check the forecast in the morning. Knowing what to expect and dressing appropriately can make the worst weather more bearable. This can also inform your decision on whether it's safe to commute or not. Ask your employer about the emergency telework policy to see if you have the option to work remotely if conditions are dangerous

Register for the Guaranteed Ride Home Program

Anyone who commutes car free at least twice a week can register for the Guaranteed Ride Home program. Once your registration is confirmed, you’ll be able to request six free rides home a year for anything from feeling sick to unexpected overtime.

Construction and Delays

It’s always a good idea to know a couple of back up routes in case of outages, delays, or construction. ATP can help by creating a personalized list of alternative commuting options if you request a custom commute plannerYou may want to keep a few brochures or local maps in your car, at work, or in your bag just in case.

Make a Kit

It's recommended to have a kit with emergency supplies that can last a couple of days. Items like drinking water, flashlights, non-perishable food, and batteries can be a lifeline in extreme circumstances. If you are in a carpool or vanpool, keeping a kit in the vehicle is an easy way to have supplies on hand in the event of an emergency.
