World Car Free Day is Coming September 22

ATP Takeaway: Car Free Day is a global celebration that encourages all to travel by means other than cars. World Car Free Day is recognized on September 22 each year, and Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP) is here to showcase why and how you should participate.

The concept of car free events and celebrations existed long before there was a globally recognized event exploring alternatives to driving alone. Depending on who you ask, car free days may have started as early as the 1950s! However, it was not until 2000 that Car Free Day as we know it today came to be recognized by the World Carfree Network occurring annually on September 22.

Why Participate in Car Free Day

Participating in Car Free Day can highlight the environmental and social costs of car dependency, while promoting a sustainable future for all. The lessons learned and the impact created from this one day can lead to a more environmentally conscious community for many more days to come.

You can host a Car Free Day at your office or property. Encourage your employees and tenants to go car free on September 22 to be a part of this world-recognized initiative.

Reduced Congestion and Reduced Emissions

Fewer cars on the road leads to lower traffic and pollution while improving air quality for all. While Car Free Day is only one day out of the year, the event provides a snapshot of what our communities can look like if we exit our comfort zone and explore other modes from driving alone.

Healthier Lifestyle

Going car free can lead to more physical activity via biking or walking, which will support your overall well-being. Letting someone else do the driving by hopping on public transit can also reduce your stress levels, ensuring no hassles with being stuck behind the wheel in traffic or locating parking.

Community and Global Solidarity

Getting around your city without a car can help to reimagine your surroundings in a new light while also creating opportunities to interact and connect with people you wouldn’t otherwise when driving alone. You can enjoy knowing that you are joining millions around the world in improving global sustainability, even if it’s just for one day.
