I’ve lived in Arlington for the past few years, and last year I moved into a building right across from the Ballston Metro. I specifically chose this location so Metrorail could be my primary way to get to work, and now my daily commute on the Orange or Silver Line to Rosslyn is quick, easy, and car free. As a household, we’ve even been able to downsize from two cars to one!
The nice part about being near the Ballston Metro is that I can also take the bus or use Capital Bikeshare. Whenever the weather is nice or if I want to make a pit stop to or from work, using a Capital Bikeshare bike is a great option. I prefer to use the silver e-bikes, especially on hilly routes! I also keep a spare helmet at work in case I want to bike to a meeting without having to worry about planning ahead. I used to own a bike but didn’t use it very much because I didn’t like having to worry about where I would lock it or having to keep up with maintenance. Mixing and matching makes my commute more enjoyable and interesting.
For those who are worried about going car free, carshare is a great safety net. My building has two Zipcar spots nearby, which makes it easy to grab a car if I really need one.
