I’ve lived in Arlington for the past few years, and last year I moved into a building right across from the Ballston Metro. I specifically chose this location so Metrorail could be my primary way to get to work, and now my daily commute on the Orange or Silver Line to Rosslyn is quick, easy, and car free. As a household, we’ve even been able to downsize from two cars to one!
Keeping My Options Open
The nice part about being near the Ballston Metro is that I can also take the bus or use Capital Bikeshare. Whenever the weather is nice or if I want to make a pit stop to or from work, using a Capital Bikeshare bike is a great option. I prefer to use the silver e-bikes, especially on hilly routes! I also keep a spare helmet at work in case I want to bike to a meeting without having to worry about planning ahead. I used to own a bike but didn’t use it very much because I didn’t like having to worry about where I would lock it or having to keep up with maintenance. Mixing and matching makes my commute more enjoyable and interesting.
For those who are worried about going car free, carshare is a great safety net. My building has two Zipcar spots nearby, which makes it easy to grab a car if I really need one.
Tips for a Transit-Based Commute
- Know the Metrorail and Metrobus schedule: I use the Metropulse app and the Commute Planning tool on WMATA’s website to know exactly what train I have to catch in the morning. Many buildings in Arlington also have a live transportation information display which shows real-time transportation updates.
- Live Near Transit if you Can: Living near a Metro Station has made using transit every day seamless. Many residential buildings have programs and amenities to help residents commute actively, like pre-loaded Smartrip Cards or bike rooms.
- Make it enjoyable: Little touches can make commuting fun. I got a Metro Live map for Christmas that lights up to show when the next train is coming (which is a big hit when guests come over!). I also like listening to podcasts or audiobooks on the train.
