October is National Work and Family Month, offering an excellent opportunity to reflect on work-life balance and its impact on mental and physical health. One of the most important elements of achieving a positive work-life balance is the relationship between our work and our commuting experiences. For instance, does your business offer flexible schedules and telework options, or provide a transportation benefit to ease the commute?
Boosting Wellness and Sustainability with Commute-Friendly Programs
Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP) is reminding you to apply for Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC) and Bicycle Friendly Businesses (BFB), two programs dedicated to recognizing and supporting workplaces that offer outstanding commute options for employees, with an emphasis on wellness, sustainability, and building deeper connections within their communities.
What is Best Workplaces for Commuters?
Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC) is an innovative recognition program that celebrates organizations dedicated to both sustainable commute choices and employee satisfaction. The program was launched in 2002 through a partnership between the Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Transportation to recognize businesses that prioritize providing options for employee commuting. Currently managed by the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida, the program has grown to include more than 762 companies across the United States and Canada, and positively impacts over 1.7 million commuters daily. Workplaces can qualify for BWC status by developing and supporting commuter programs, including hybrid and telework options, carpool and vanpool services, free or discounted public transportation, and other initiatives designed to make employees’ commutes easier and more efficient.
Businesses interested in joining Best Workplaces for Commuters can apply as employers, sites, or universities. Once they become members, organizations can unlock numerous benefits, including improved employee satisfaction and retention, along with expert guidance on enhancing transportation opportunities. Additionally, membership provides valuable opportunities for networking and collaborating with other BWC members, reinforcing a commitment to fostering convenient, sustainable, and commuter friendly workplaces
What is a Bicycle Friendly Business?
The Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) program is a recognition initiative managed by the League of American Bicyclists as a part of their Bicycle Friendly America program. Currently, BFB recognizes over 1,300 businesses, offering support and guidance to improve their bicycle friendliness. The program provides guidance and resources to help organizations better serve the cycling community. BFB’s approach is centered on five essential elements, known as the Five E’s: Engineering, Education, Events, Evaluation & Planning, and Equity, Accessibility & Inclusion.
Businesses can pursue recognition as a BFB through the League’s triannual application cycle, which occurs in winter, spring, and fall. Awards are tiered as Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, and BFBs retain their designation for four years before reapplying. Current BFBs are encouraged to apply for higher recognition levels at any time.
The benefits of becoming a BFB includes improved employee recruitment and retention and bolsters stronger connections with the local community. The amenities BFB recipients offer to employees can also help to improve mental and physical health, increase productivity, and boost morale. Organizations that apply for BFB status will gain national recognition for their commitment to wellness, sustainability, and corporate responsibility. Once your organization's application has been reviewed, the League will share personalized feedback and guidance to further strengthen the bicycle friendly initiatives offered.
How ATP Can Help
Being recognized nationally as an organization dedicated to enhancing employees’ work-life balance is an excellent way to show that you care about their experience, value their time and dedication, and are committed to their overall wellness. ATP can assist with every step of the application process for both BWC and BFB to ensure your business receives the recognition it deserves. Along the way, we can work together to develop and refine your commuter programs. Applying for a Bicycle Friendly Business designation also helps earn platinum Champions recognition.
The deadlines for joining Bicycle Friendly Business and Best Workplaces for Commuters are approaching fast – October 30, 2024, for BFB and November 30, 2024, for BWC. Don’t miss your chance to be recognized for your commitment to transportation benefits.
