ATP Takeaway: Metro will be closing various stations on the Orange Line which will impact commuters around the Ballston area. Work with Arlington Transportation Partners to avoid the disruption

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced their scheduled summer maintenance projects which include the closing of multiple Orange Line stations around Arlington County. Some commuters might face some disruption if they are commuting to or through the Ballston-MU Station on the Orange or Silver Lines.

Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP) can help minimize the disruption for your employees, tenants, and residents. Find out more about the shutdown and how ATP can assist you in preparing for the changes this summer.

When Do the Closures Begin?

WMATA has divided the maintenance projects on the Orange Line into two overlapping periods. The first period will extend from June 3 to June 25, 2023 and will impact the following stations:

  • Vienna (Fairfax - GMU) Station
  • Dunn Loring (Merrifield) Station
  • West Falls Church Station
  • East Falls Church Station
  • Ballston-MU Station

The second period will follow from June 26 to July 16, 2023. The stations affected by this period are:

  • Vienna (Fairfax - GMU) Station
  • Dunn Loring (Merrifield) Station

Know Your Options

In order to support commuters who rely on these stations, WMATA will be providing free shuttles throughout the scheduled maintenance. All shuttles will operate during normal Metrorail hours and will leave every five minutes during rush hour (6:00-9:00 a.m. and 3:00-7:00 p.m.) and every ten minutes at all other times. Commuters can expect to wait up to 20 minutes during rush hour due to the large volume of riders.

Shuttle alternatives from June 3 to June 25:

  • Orange Line Shuttle: A shuttle will provide service between Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, and Ballston-MU Stations.
  • Silver Line Shuttle: A shuttle will provide service between McLean, East Falls Church, and Ballston-MU stations.
  • Orange Line Express: An express shuttle service will directly bring passengers from Vienna Station straight to Rosslyn station. The express shuttle is only available from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekends.
  • Silver Line Limited: A limited-stop shuttle that will service passengers between Washington Dulles International Airport, McLean, and Rosslyn. The limited shuttle is only available from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekends.

Work with ATP to Avoid the Disruption

Although repairs, upgrades, and rehabilitation of metro stations are necessary, they can be a disruption. However, ATP can help your organizations formulate a plan to ensure a seamless transition for employees who are commuting to the office. We can provide your organizations with customized digital resources, host webinars, and in-person events to share information about travel options to navigate the summer metro shutdown.
