ATP Takeaway:  Arlington Transportation Partners is excited to share a few apps that will help keep your commute easy, efficient, and car free.

When switching to a car-free or car-lite commute, it can be challenging to figure out how to begin the transition. From choosing a mode to the cost of your commute, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the information. That’s why Arlington Transportation Partners (ATP) is here to suggest a few mobile apps that can help make starting a new commute just a little bit easier.

Getting From Point A to Point B

When selecting a mode or determining when you need to leave the house, these apps help you plan the essentials. These apps are also not specific to the DC region, so you can use them to continue your transportation choices whether you are on a business trip or a vacation.

Google Maps

Google Maps can help active commuters, drivers, and transit users alike, with trip planning and directions available for all three options. Carpool and vanpool riders can use this app to see tolls and check traffic. Transit users can get information on their nearest bus or train and time of arrival. Active commuters can find out estimated time for their walk or bike ride.

Transit App

Specifically for transit riders, the Transit app provides all the details for an easy public transportation commute. Users can prepare ahead of their first ride with trip planning tools and the ability to view nearby transit options. If your schedule changes day to day, Transit also shows real time data so you never miss your trip.

For Metro and Transit Riders

SmarTrip

An app specifically for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the SmarTrip app provides nearby WMATA routes and options for users based on their location. Users can also register their SmarTrip cards directly on the app and monitor balance, add value, and even check their transaction history. Other features include options to bookmark favorite lines or routes and save favorite destinations.

MetroPulse

Another app from WMATA, MetroPulse is like the Transit app, but specifically for Metrorail and Metrobus. The app features both a trip planner and a nearby service tool, as well as bus and rail maps for users. There’s even a live chat feature where users can ask questions or report issues. MetroPulse also has a web version for those looking to utilize its features without a smartphone.

GoMyWayVA

The GoMyWayVA app is a one-stop shop for maximizing efficiency on your commute. The app allows you to plan trips and combine multiple modes into your route, warning you about any delays, traffic, or hazards on the way. It also offers additional resources such as nearby bike rentals and open parking spaces, providing a seamless experience for your trip. And the best part: the app will show your transit options and provide rewards for making more sustainable choices.

For the Active Commuter

Capital Bikeshare

The official bikeshare system of the DC region also offers its own official app. This app allows you to view nearby bikes, start and end your trips, and even manage your membership. It can also tell you nearby transit options for those with a multimodal commute. If you enable push notifications, the app will send alerts for finished rides, so you never have to worry about whether you are still being charged once the bike is put away.

Lime, Bird, and GCOO

The other three official micromobility vendors in Arlington, Lime, Bird, and GCOO, all have their own official apps. The Lime app show you nearby rides, allows you to unlock your bike or scooter, pay or purchase passes. Bird also shows nearby Birds and has payment options, as well as unique features including group rides and giving a free ride to a friend. GCOO offers payment features, shows you the best deals, and has a map for nearby rides. All three of these apps are great options for those looking to add a little more physical activity to their commute.

And if You Still Need Four Wheels

Free2Move

Free2Move is Arlington’s official free-floating carshare provider. The app shows you nearby cars available and allows you to go through every step of the rental process right on your phone. These cars do not have set spaces, so users can pick them up and drop them off almost anywhere.

Zipcar

Another carsharing app, Zipcar is Arlington’s reserved space carsharing option. The Zipcar app allows you to view nearby cars, make reservations ahead of time, and extend your trip if needed. Users should be mindful that Zipcars do have set parking spaces, and should plan their trips accordingly.

ATP Can Keep You Up to Date
