On Thursday, May 15, Arlington and the greater Washington Metropolitan area celebrated Bike to Work Day (BTWD). Celebrated every May during National Bike Month, BTWD encourages commuters and community members to bike to work by hosting pit stops with refreshments, t-shirts, snacks, and giveaways!
For the past 20 years, BTWD has been held on a Friday. In response to regional commuting trends showing busiest commute days being Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the decision was made to change BTWD to a Thursday.
This year’s BTWD was a huge success in Arlington County, with an impressive 1,848 people registering to participate. The strong turnout is a clear sign that our community continues to embrace biking and active transportation. Curious to see which pit stops drew the biggest crowds? Here’s a look at the final registration numbers from the eight pit stops in Arlington.

Pit Stop Highlights and Anecdotes
Fun Fact: Each year, the official BTWD T-shirt is a different color. There have been repeat colors but not the exact same shade. Over 20 years, red had been used as a T-shirt color only once — until 2025, that is.
Rosslyn: Thanks to the Rosslyn BID and Arlington County’s Department of Parks and Recreation, Gateway Park has hosted Rosslyn’s BTWD pit stop for nearly two decades!
Shirlington: Austin Reed of Astro Doughnuts started a new position the week of BTWD, but she took off the morning of May 15 to manage coffee and doughnut service at the Shirlington Pit Stop.
Ballston: Some participants shared their BTWD experience on social media. See what Dennis Findley, Chair of the Virginia Board of People with Disabilities, shared about his son, Stirling Findley’s, first BTWD. From Dennis Findley via Facebook, “Bike-to-Work Day in the Washington DC area has been on Stirling’s calendar forever. No matter that the ride WAS the work! Thanks to Lauren Hassel and Judah dal Cais at BikeArlington for having a grand plan for Stirling at the Ballston Pit Stop!”
